Second, travel insurance enables you to meet the cost of medical treatment both while you are in transit and at your destination and, if you are unlucky enough to have a significant illness or accident, will meet the cost of bringing you and your family back home if necessary.

Medical care may be very good at your destination and it may even be very much cheaper than it is at home. Nevertheless, a day or two in hospital could still result in a substantial bill which eats deeply into your spending money. It is also possible that medical care at your destination leaves a great deal to be desired and you might well need to curtail your holiday and return home to get the treatment you require.

Third, travel insurance will provide protection for your possessions both while you are traveling and at your destination so that you will be compensated in the event of loss.

If you have spent any time traveling then you will probably have suffered the loss of your luggage at some point and will know only too well just how annoying and costly it is. I will never forget stopping off for a bite to eat on my way to the airport on one particular holiday and carefully securing my suitcase in the trunk of my hire car. When I returned approximately half an hour later I discovered that somebody had forced the passenger door lock and folded the rear seat down to access the boot and make away with my case.

I will also not quickly forget waiting at a road junction one hot and sunny day when a motorcycle pulled up alongside the car and a man reached in through the open passenger side window to snatch my mother's purse which was by her feet on the floor.

Traveling abroad is expensive enough but heading off without suitable insurance can land you with bills that you simply do not have the money to pay. Accordingly, whenever you are planning a trip do not forget to add international travel insurance to your vacation list.
