Culver City Public Theatre Announces 2007 Summer Season
Culver City, CA (PRWEB) June 7, 2007 -- The Culver City Public Theatre ("CCPT") proudly announces the schedule for its 2007 Summer Season in Dr. Paul Carlson Memorial Park. CCPT will offer its growing and loyal audience a diverse and entertaining season with a challenging mix of comedy, suspense, heartbreak and a fresh adaptation of a classic children's tale.
Now entering its 9th season of bringing free, professional, classical theatre to Los Angeles-area audiences, CCPT will kick off the summer with one of Shakespeare's most enduring romantic comedies, "Much Ado About Nothing". This classic entertains with uncommon wit, humor and exquisitely clever dialog. The fun unfolds at a brisk pace as love, infidelity and miscommunication wreak havoc. The story features lively contrasting plots; a battle-of-the-sexes between Beatrice and Benedick, and the more conventional romance of Hero and Claudio. Performances are scheduled for weekend afternoons at 2 p.m. from July 14-29.
Director Ken MacFarlane, an audience favorite, returns for his fourth season, having previously mounted CCPT's highly praised productions of "Medea" and "Antigone". As an actor, Mr. MacFarlane was acclaimed for his performance as the dastardly Mayor in CCPT's 2004 production of "An Enemy of the People".
"With its young lovers, playful bickering and a nasty villain, 'Much Ado' is the perfect romp for an afternoon in Carlson park," enthuses Mr. MacFarlane.
Next, CCPT will proudly present Neil Simon's "The Good Doctor", based on the charming short stories of Anton Chekhov. Laugh as our narrator, a distinguished writer, leads you through a series of vignettes that include a sneeze that ruins a man's career, a visit to the dentist that goes comically awry, and a sweetly innocent woman who turns out to be quite a handful! Performances are scheduled for weekend afternoons at 2pm from August 4-19.
Culver City Public Theater Co-Executive Director Dean Edward will helm "The Good Doctor", which was recently presented as a staged reading in a sold out benefit for CCPT at the Ivy Substation. Mr. Edward has previously starred in CCPT's productions of "Hay Fever", Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" and "Thieves' Carnival" and he co-wrote "An Afternoon with Hans Christian Andersen" for CCPT's 2005 Children's Popcorn Theatre summer production. He has served as board President since 2006.
"Shamefully ignored, 'The Good Doctor' is a wonderful mixture of comedy, drama, and musical", explains Mr. Edward. The Detroit Free Press has praised the play as, "Exceedingly funny, except when it breaks for the occasional moment of exquisite tenderness ... ultimately, 'The Good Doctor' is a love letter to the theatre."
In addition to these mainstage offerings, Culver City Public Theatre will continue its tradition of presenting theatre for young audiences, the Children's Popcorn Theatre. This year's offering will be a new adaptation of "King Midas", written by Co-Executive Director Heidi Dotson. Ms. Dotson explains, "'Ole King Midas wants to be the richest man in the world ... he learns valuable lessons about greed and power ... but is it too late?" Performances run in tandem with CCPT's mainstage season and are scheduled for weekend afternoons at Noon from July 14th -- August 19th.
Ms. Dotson emphasizes, "This year's season is full of exciting selections. The board of CCPT is very happy with the plays they have selected for the 2007 season; William Shakespeare, Neil Simon, and an original adaptation. There is a real need right now for laughter, and we are happy to oblige!"
Mr. Edward adds, "We've chosen plays that stretch our company's style in a way that brings these wonderful pieces to life. We constantly strive to redefine and reexamine what is considered to be 'Classical Theatre'. It's simply exhilarating to me to be able expose our audiences to more and more forms of classical style, and performance."
Founded in 1998, Culver City Public Theatre (an AEA LOA company) continues a 21-year tradition of presenting an annual summer season of free, outdoor, classical theatre in beautiful Dr. Paul Carlson Memorial Park, located at the corner of Motor Avenue and Braddock Drive (near the 405 and 10 freeways) in historic Culver City, CA. All performances are held during the summer on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m., with the Children's Popcorn Theater performance at 12 Noon. The public is invited to bring their lawn chairs and blankets to attend the productions that are intended for young and adult audiences alike.
CCPT has experienced enormous growth each year, has become a popular attraction to more than 2,000 patrons each summer and has received critical acclaim for such productions as "Electra", "The Misanthrope" (L.A. Times 'Best Bet'), "3 By Shakespeare's Skum", "Scapin", "Hay Fever" and "An Enemy of the People". In 2006, ReviewPlays.com named CCPT's production of "The Madwoman of Chaillot" as the Comedy of the Year.
Culver City Public Theatre is an incorporated, not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that is sponsored by the Culver City Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services and by the generous contributions and grants from the City of Culver City, The Cultural Affairs Commission, The Culver City Parks and Services Foundation and Sony Pictures. Additional funding comes from donations from local businesses and patrons.

The beaches in and around Puerto Vallarta may be the most diverse in Mexico. Located at the midpoint of Banderas Bay, the area surrounding Puerto Vallarta boasts 34 miles of coastline, 26 of which are sandy beaches. Within the city, the beaches are elegant and pristine, bordered by restaurants and resorts. Beaches to the north of the city tend to be longer and wider, with great opportunities for surfing and swimming.
